The University of Sheffield Space Society
What/Who are SpaceSoc?
We are the Sheffield Space Society. We provide opportunities for society members to learn about space, get involved with rocketry and space-related activities, and have some fun through socials! And we’re not only for Astronomy/ Aerospace students, we welcome anyone with an interest in space.
We’re also the Sheffield branch of UKSEDS (UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space)- the UK’s national student space society, and a registered charity. UKSEDS run an annual national conference for students, as well as workshops, projects and competitions throughout the year. They also provide advice and information on careers in the space industry, and support us with funding to enable us to have our own internal projects and workshops.
What do we do?
We run a number of different events throughout the year: from educational talks, to space trips, to pub/bar socials. An example of some of the things we’ll get up to:
Trip to the National Student Space Conference in Exeter
Camping trip to the Peaks
Weekly pub socials
Participation in the UKSEDS Rocketry competition
Trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester
Why should I become a member?
Members automatically gain membership to UKSEDS as well as SpaceSoc, and so will receive discounts to ticketed events from each organisation, including the National Student Space Conference.
They’ll also receive a one-month free trial of the orbit and spacecraft simulator, PIGI, provided by our partners, Saber Astronautics, as well as a regular newsletter via email featuring space news and info about upcoming SpaceSoc and UKSEDS events.
